The Doctors’ Association UK are looking to gather support for a doctor recently sent to tribunal, whom we strongly suspect has been subjected to unfair treatment because, like countless others, she is from an ethnic minority. As stated in the tribunal, Dr Manjula Arora was suspended for the fact that when she asked for a laptop for work purposes, she was told her interest was noted, but she took that to mean it was being promised to her. She used the word promised when next asking for a laptop and this has resulted in her being found dishonest, and thus being suspended for one month. This, it seems, was enough to warrant medical suspension.

DAUK wants to know why this even got as far as the GMC, let alone resulted in a suspension, for yet another doctor with overseas training. We, alongside the British Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (BAPIO), have written to the Professional Standards Authority (PSA) asked them to review this case urgently and the GMC have since announced a case review.

The PSA have said they will be looking at Mrs Arora’s case and have asked for feedback. Please add your voice to the support, directly to the PSA.

All the GMC is good at is to pursue frivolous and trivial cases and harass the medical professionals. Many colleagues see the GMC as a potential persecutor. However, on the positive side they have missed many cases of fake doctors who have been able to practice medicine on false documentation. At least they have been lenient on them! So, more than useless the GMC is toxic. Not to mention the generous subscription we pay year in, year out, to be ''protected'' by them...

This is downright abuse of power for an issue that should have been resolved locally. The culprits are both the local manager and the GMC for being unfairly draconian. Given the strong evidence that the GMC is systematically unfair to non-whites and that their processes actively harm the health of accused individuals (including increased rates of suicide), would there not be a strong case to bring a case against the GMS and to question its previous decisions. It seems that many medical careers have been disproportionately wrecked through the actions of the GMC.

Shame on the MDU having failed beffore the MPTS now they want to spend members millions on an appeal ! "'Having considered all of the evidence the tribunal found that the doctor had been dishonest and that her fitness to practise was impaired. Given that finding, and submissions from the doctor, the tribunal determined that the minimum sanction needed was a short suspension.' The MDU, which represented Dr Arora, declined to comment.

The GMC is weaponised against doctors with foreign or BAME doctors bearing the brunt. The GMC needs medical professionals to sit on its boards as independent entities to ensure it is regulated. We should all have a say in how our regulator is run. The salaries and benefits should all be published so that we can see how many people at the GmC have 6 figure salaries, private medical insurance and other perks

You have my support and understanding, pleased to hear you are challenging this verdict. I recall a number of years ago the GMC made a big deal about how they were screening referrals more effectively to focus on patient safety issues leaving these sort of issues to be resolved locally. Clearly the GMC are incapable of changing their ways despite wasting a load of our fees on the consultation events and publishing of guidelines. Shame on the team who should have passed this straight back to the referring organisation.

Dear Dr Arora, My heart bleeds for you and all others whom have come before and after you with injustices at the GMC which is still publicly stated by the profession as unfit for purpose since 2018. Hence the GMC (and in-house MPTS) actions cannot set the standards of behaviour for the profession as they do not have the professions confidence in them. Far too many mistakes have happened not just Mastercall OOH failures and Dr B failure to understand Northern English language but that of GMC triage, GMC-racism and GMC-prosecution which given past behaviour probably included GMC-deceit in order to make negative findings/prosecution at all costs - whilst neglecting that neither serious or persistent barrier has been breached. It is clear to any common person the actions of the GMC are absurd, wholly inappropriate and further alienates GPs and doctors to leave the profession. We all stand behind you with your appeal, take our strength knowing the whole profession stands behind you: against increasing injustices by our wayward GMC regulator that somehow is supposedly acting as a registered charity. Thank you DAUK for supporting Dr Arora 🙂

It’s appalling & unbelievable how GMC treats the doctors. Dr Arora’s case is not the first and it won’t be the last. In the past BMA has declared no confidence against GMC twice but nothing has changed. In the recent report from GMC 29 doctors have died during the GMC investigation in the past 2 years. This is atrocious. They put most of the investigation under a blanket dishonestly and make a mountain out of a molehill and completely destroy the doctors lives. GMC should only be given powers to act on clinical concerns regarding patient safety and nothing else. These enormous powers they have to investigate everything should be stripped off them. Until the union and doctors wake up this will sadly continue.

An awful and scarring personal experience, inflicted for the most farcical of reasons. It’s beyond pathetic that this was allowed to happen as it did, seems the GMC lost sight of its real purpose quite some time ago now. I can only echo those who cynically say it’s a way of keeping the GMC’s lawyers in money - this is hardly the first case where the public would not have been ‘protected’ or served in any what whatsoever, regardless of the outcome. The only beneficiaries of this pointless pursuit are the legal team, and they leave a lot of suffering in their wake.

Dear Dr Arora, I am shocked but not surprised at the GMC decision in your case. Whenever there is a case no matter how frivolous the complaint, the first thing they do is throw the doctor under the bus. For all their policies (which is not worth the paper they are written on) there is no support for the doctor. In your case there was no patient related issues at all and the whole case hinged on the word 'promised'. This was a kangaroo court in a banana Republic and the final outcome was so ridiculous that this has caused an uproar in the medical profession and rightly so. We pay huge sums of money to this defunct organisation who now are essentially guardians of the Oxford Dictionary! It's time this organisation is disbanded.

I’m appalled at this case, the GMC appears to have made a serious error. From the evidence seen the conclusion would fail the test of the man on the Clapham omnibus. An average person would conclude there was an intent to supply. If this has occurred due to Dr Manjula Arora being non English then it’s racism. I would have assumed that the email intended a supply of a laptop had it been sent to me and had I sent it to an employee I would accept it showed my intention to supply. There is reasonable doubt exhibited. I sincerely hope the GMC reconsider this flawed verdict.

Dear Dr Arora I can only marvel at the oppressive bureaucracy that is the GMC. To suspend a doctor with a previously unblemished career shows that David Graeber's analysis of Bullshit Jobs in his book of the same name was prescient and accurate. The actions of the GMC in you case confirm his thesis of the rise of meaningless bureaucratic jobs and the damage they do not only to the people affected by these bureaucracies but to the bureaucrats themselves. Dear Manjula, I am writing to express my full support to you. I know how much impact such things can have on a doctor's personal and professional life. But stay strong and fight this unfairness and injustice. We are all behind you. There is no excuse for things to have reached this stage. A complete overhaul of investigatory processes at local and GMC level is needed. I sincerely hope that the medical community will not stop fighting until such reformation. But for now, I want to say, believe in yourself and keep fighting. This shall pass too. All the Best!!

It’s extremely disappointing to see that this case made it to the level of an investigation by the GMC and resulted in suspension. Clearly, this is a patient safety issue that has been raised by the doctor to their employer as a result of not having the appropriate tools to work with. It is very saddening that anyone has to be governed by an organization that seems to sometimes handle issues without considering simple reason. Does this mean I have to be afraid of asking my employer for work tools? Surely not.

The treatment of Dr Arora, by the GMC and her local trust, is completely disproportionate to her request and subsequent actions. At a time when retention and morale are at an all time low, it is not hard to see, with cases such as this, as to why. Ethnic minorities are not inherently ‘untrustworthy’ but are an essential part of the NHS and should be treated with equal respect to their white peers.
