My project

The Doctors’ Association UK are looking to gather support for a doctor recently sent to tribunal, whom we strongly suspect has been subjected to unfair treatment because, like countless others, she is from an ethnic minority. As stated in the tribunal, Dr Manjula Arora was suspended for the fact that when she asked for a laptop for work purposes, she was told her interest was noted, but she took that to mean it was being promised to her. She used the word promised when next asking for a laptop and this has resulted in her being found dishonest, and thus being suspended for one month. This, it seems, was enough to warrant medical suspension.

DAUK wants to know why this even got as far as the GMC, let alone resulted in a suspension, for yet another doctor with overseas training. We, alongside the British Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (BAPIO), have written to the Professional Standards Authority (PSA) asked them to review this case urgently and the GMC have since announced a case review.

The PSA have said they will be looking at Mrs Arora’s case and have asked for feedback. Please add your voice to the support, directly to the PSA.

It’s appalling & unbelievable how GMC treats the doctors. Dr Arora’s case is not the first and it won’t be the last. In the past BMA has declared no confidence against GMC twice but nothing has changed. In the recent report from GMC 29 doctors have died during the GMC investigation in the past 2 years. This is atrocious. They put most of the investigation under a blanket dishonestly and make a mountain out of a molehill and completely destroy the doctors lives. GMC should only be given powers to act on clinical concerns regarding patient safety and nothing else. These enormous powers they have to investigate everything should be stripped off them. Until the union and doctors wake up this will sadly continue.

An awful and scarring personal experience, inflicted for the most farcical of reasons. It’s beyond pathetic that this was allowed to happen as it did, seems the GMC lost sight of its real purpose quite some time ago now. I can only echo those who cynically say it’s a way of keeping the GMC’s lawyers in money - this is hardly the first case where the public would not have been ‘protected’ or served in any what whatsoever, regardless of the outcome. The only beneficiaries of this pointless pursuit are the legal team, and they leave a lot of suffering in their wake.

Dear Dr Arora, I am shocked but not surprised at the GMC decision in your case. Whenever there is a case no matter how frivolous the complaint, the first thing they do is throw the doctor under the bus. For all their policies (which is not worth the paper they are written on) there is no support for the doctor. In your case there was no patient related issues at all and the whole case hinged on the word 'promised'. This was a kangaroo court in a banana Republic and the final outcome was so ridiculous that this has caused an uproar in the medical profession and rightly so. We pay huge sums of money to this defunct organisation who now are essentially guardians of the Oxford Dictionary! It's time this organisation is disbanded.

I’m appalled at this case, the GMC appears to have made a serious error. From the evidence seen the conclusion would fail the test of the man on the Clapham omnibus. An average person would conclude there was an intent to supply. If this has occurred due to Dr Manjula Arora being non English then it’s racism. I would have assumed that the email intended a supply of a laptop had it been sent to me and had I sent it to an employee I would accept it showed my intention to supply. There is reasonable doubt exhibited. I sincerely hope the GMC reconsider this flawed verdict.

Ref: GMC vs Dr. Arora. Medical profession has been protesting for years about the procedures followed and outcomes in this organisation. Now time has come to discuss politically, how to reform the function of regulating any profession for the safety of the public. Medical personal and the public should be encouraged to write to their MP's, so that this matter is discussed in the Parliament. As per the legal profession dragging the procedure for financial gain beyond the point of discussion should be curtailed. Why did this word "PROMISE" to 10 days of talking?

Very poor judgement displayed by a number of people in positions of power: Dr B., the GMC & MPTS. Such a trivial matter, hinging on a single word "promise", which is open to such a wide range of interpretation, should never have been an issue over which a hard-working doctor was suspended. The regulatory system is vindictive and unjust. I have lost all confidence in it.

Dear Dr Arora I can only marvel at the oppressive bureaucracy that is the GMC. To suspend a doctor with a previously unblemished career shows that David Graeber's analysis of Bullshit Jobs in his book of the same name was prescient and accurate. The actions of the GMC in you case confirm his thesis of the rise of meaningless bureaucratic jobs and the damage they do not only to the people affected by these bureaucracies but to the bureaucrats themselves. If it is any consolation you have and will have a meaningful career where you have helped people and done some good for your fellow man. The same cannot be said of Charlie Massey or the people on your panel who found against you. Be strong

For the GMC's lawyer to describe Dr B's e-mail as “entirely unambiguous” is patently false; it appears he was trying to fob her off with a vague undertaking. Dr Arora clearly felt that she needed a laptop for her clinical work. For Dr B to deny her one seems to me to be in breach of medical ethics. Perhaps he should be reported to the GMC.

It’s extremely disappointing to see that this case made it to the level of an investigation by the GMC and resulted in suspension. Clearly, this is a patient safety issue that has been raised by the doctor to their employer as a result of not having the appropriate tools to work with. It is very saddening that anyone has to be governed by an organization that seems to sometimes handle issues without considering simple reason. Does this mean I have to be afraid of asking my employer for work tools? Surely not.

I honestly have no words for this ridiculous injustice. The only dishonest party here is the gmc abusing our money to punish someone for a minor communicative discrepancy. You have my full support and I'm thinking of you Dr Arora!

The fact that this is even an issue directly has to do with racism and bullying in the workplace. Please let's focus on patient care - this needless pettiness hurts everyone.

Shocked and outraged that a GP has been brought to attention regarding such a minor issue. Really GMC needed involvement. What’s next?

Dr Arora, I want you to know that majority of us doctors are rightly outraged at this grave miscarriage of justice. Why did you even need to ask for a laptop in the first place if you needed it to do your job? How could something so trivial amount to a suspension for dishonesty? I’m afraid the GMC/ MPTS lost their way here. You have my full support and we will push this as high as we can to get you justice.

Appalling treatment of someone who has served 30 years and should not have been expected to work without a laptop in the first place. Stinks of racism!

The treatment of Dr Arora, by the GMC and her local trust, is completely disproportionate to her request and subsequent actions. At a time when retention and morale are at an all time low, it is not hard to see, with cases such as this, as to why. Ethnic minorities are not inherently ‘untrustworthy’ but are an essential part of the NHS and should be treated with equal respect to their white peers.

This is a ridiculous judgment and the suspension was very unfair and this is a likely stain to her records. She took the statement as best as she understood it and wasn’t quite dishonest in her recorded words. The GMC should quite revisit this judgement as Natives who have done worse have gotten away unpunished.

This is surprising and. Shocking case,. There appears to be a communication barrier between the MD and Dr Arora. Remote working is a boon as evident during the Pandemic there is nothing wrong in asking for a Laptop. What really is upsetting that it is becoming blatant in any case hearing with GMC the Doctors view, circumstances, and reasons are Never taken into account especially if the Dr is Overseas trained Dr. I feel overseas Dr have to live in fear and May be in future they should be proactively Counselled for GMC’s Predeliction.

The NHS is so broken and literally existing in the good will of the people working for it . To think that this is an issue what putting A fellow colleague through the drill of GMC is heart breaking. To also think that you are in a career where an essential tool that should be delivered to you before you start working is an issue that land you a suspension is soul destroying. I would like many be considering my options out of medicine.

Dear Dr Manjula Arora, Sending you love and support 100%. You were asserting your needs and being pro-active. Usually for women this would result in people calling us pushy or bossy, but to be called “liar” is a new low! Dr B’s actions to reinterpret his own words, his refusal to equip you with a necessary work item, and consequently to report you to the GMC gobsmacked me. Countersue him for damages!

This is a mindless act which beggars belief. This is just another in a series of illogical and punitive decisions taken by GMC in the recent past and will do no good to the already eroded confidence of its 'members' in the organisation. Shameful!

This case is a dreadful abuse of power on the part of the unaccountable GMC, which is now harming the profession, damaging morale and has become unfit for purpose. Dr Arora has been targeted by her employer and wholly wrongfully treated by the GMC, which must be regulated and reformed. What a dreadful reflection of medicine in the UK.

Dr M Arora, was doing her job and it was the company’s job to provide her with all the tools- if anyone that should have been referred - it should have been the employer who didn’t give her the laptop which was required to do her job- but instead referred her to the GMC. I’m concerned that my annual fees are being used to suspend hard working doctors like Dr M Arora! And what is the point of paying for indemnity if such things are happening. If it’s not about the Laptop- then what is it truly about? Is it about her ethnicity? Colour? We would like some answers from GMC please!

It is outrageous that a miscommunication/misunderstanding that can simply be resolved locally, has instead made it to the GMC and lead to this. All the support from a fellow BAME doctor. It is extremely important to raise this and make sure no other doctor goes through the same difficult process unnecessarily again.
