Dolin Bhagawati from DAUK spoke to BBC Radio 5 Live earlier about the increased risk to ethnic minority healthcare workers from Covid-19.
“There is a clear correlation between ethnic minorities and health inequality, and this needs to be born into account as a government strategy for lockdown is being considered.”
“Things like reducing occupational hazards by ensuring adequate and appropriate, safe PPE in hospitals and reducing barriers to access to health care such as reviewing the NHS immigration surcharge.”
When asked about whether it would be appropriate to have a different kind of risk assessment for BAME healthcare workers, he added: “I think a risk assessment is vitally important. At the end of the day, any healthcare workers first duty is to their family and they need to be in a safe working environment. If they are not safe to work in a hospital and on the frontline, they should not be working on the frontline.”
