Guilty Until Proven Innocent: DAUK’s Dr Jenny Vaughan in the BMJ on the effect of GMC investigation

Following a notification from the GMC about an investigation on a complaint, a psychiatrist in West London has died by suicide

Dr Jenny Vaughan, co-lead for DAUK’s Learn Not Blame campaign, in the BMJ:

“We do have a great deal of concern about the number of suicides. It is our shared experience that doctors under investigation by the GMC often feel they are treated as guilty until proven innocent.”

West London assistant coroner Anton van Dellen recorded a conclusion of suicide, “I have no hesitation in concluding that the information in the content of the communication from the GMC did contribute to Dr McPhillips’s state of mind and therefore contributed to his death.”
