DAUK on ITV News: NHS deaths from Covid-19 must have comprehensive inquests

Dr Katie Sanderson from the Doctors' Association UK says there are disturbing parallels with Hillsborough.

The Association, which represents doctors says only comprehensive inquests into the deaths of every NHS and care worker will give the bereaved the ability to ask questions and have the circumstances of their loved ones’ deaths fully explained.

There are also calls for a full public inquiry into the provision of PPE and the impact on healthcare professionals.

We have had concerns about the availability of personal protective equipment on the frontline and launched our #ProtectTheFrontline campaign.

Rinesh Parmar, the chair of the Doctors Association UK, has expressed concern. He said: “The provision of PPE is so vital to the safety of health workers that to suggest coroners do not consider its supply in detail misses a big part of the picture.”

He added: “Only comprehensive inquests into the deaths of every NHS and care worker will give the bereaved the ability to ask questions and have the circumstances of their loved ones’ deaths fully explained.”

DAUK writes to Chief Coroner with concerns over guidance on healthcare worker inquests

The Doctors’ Association are the first to write to the Chief Coroner today about the guidance he published on 28th April 2020 into the investigation of healthcare worker COVID-19 deaths. We felt that the guidance sought to limit the opening of inquests into deaths caused by coronavirus and also the scope of those inquests that are opened. It is alarming that the guidance suggests that most deaths of healthcare workers caused by COVID-19 should not receive any investigation at all.

DAUK in Telegraph: Inquests into the deaths of NHS Workers must look at look at PPE provision

"Inquests into the deaths of NHS workers from coronavirus should not examine systemic failures in the provision of personal protective equipment (PPE), the Chief Coroner has warned."

"Rinesh Parmar, the chair of the Doctors Association UK, said the issue of whether a lack of PPE contributed to some of the deaths would be an essential part of the inquest process."

"He said: "The provision of PPE is so vital to the safety of health workers that to suggest coroners do not consider its supply in detail misses a big part of the picture. Only comprehensive inquests into the deaths of every NHS and care worker will give the bereaved the ability to ask questions and have the circumstances of their loved ones’ deaths fully explained."
