This week Dr Sammy Batt-Rawden, DAUK Co-Founder chaired a panel at the Royal College of Physicians on Wellbeing in the Workforce. Sammy’s guests included Dr Emma Vaux, Alexandra Adams and Amandip Singh. The panel covered a number of topics, including whether resilience training and wellness initiatives were fit for purpose, and how much responsibility should lie with the system rather than the individual. How can we maintain our doctors empathy? In her TED talk Sammy reframes the burnout debate and explains that doctors are suffering from moral injury, the psychological harm that occurs when doctors cannot give patients the care they deserve due to system pressures. Sammy also speaks openly and honestly about her experience of being on the other side on the NHS as an A&E and ICU registrar when her son was born at 27 weeks and spent 3 months in intensive care.
